Family Migration

Parent Migration
  1. Parents of Australian Citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens may apply to migrate to Australia.
  2. The child must be settled in Australia and must sponsor the parent.
  3. Parents must pass the "balance of family" test required by law.
  4. There are a few types of parent visas. Some require higher application charges. Some visas are permanent or temporary.
Partner Migration
  1. A person in a relationship with an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen may be allowed to migrate to Australia.
  2. The relationship should be a married relationship, de facto relationship, prospective relationship (fiancé) or interdependent relationship.
  3. The type of visa depends on the type of relationship.
  4. All applicants must be sponsored.
  5. The sponsor is normally the person who is in the relationship with the applicant. The sponsor must also satisfy qualifying criteria.


Child Migration
  1. A Dependent Child, Orphan Relative or Adopted Child of an Australian Citizen, permanent visa holder or eligible New Zealand citizen may apply to migrate to Australia.
  2. Child migration is for the natural child, adopted child or stepchild and must be sponsored. The sponsor must be an Australian Citizen, permanent visa holder or eligible New Zealand citizen.


Other Family Migration

Aged Dependent Relatives are people who are single, widowed or divorced aged persons and who are financially dependent on a relative who lives in Australia.

Remaining Relatives are people who are the brother, sister or child of a person in Australia, who, if they did not migrate to Australia would be left in an isolated situation overseas.

Carers are people who are willing and able to give substantial and continual assistance to an Australian relative with a medical condition. The medical condition is one that is causing physical, intellectual or sensory impairment of the Australian relative's ability to attend to practical aspects of daily life.

All the above applicants must have a sponsor.

The sponsor is the relative in Australia, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
